NSW: Cleaners on strike over hotel development plans

Cleaners at a Sydney hotel have walked off the job over plans to convert the hotel
into luxury apartments after the Olympics.

Cleaners at the 418-room Kings Cross Gazebo Hotel take strike action over owner SYD
FISCHER'S plan to close the hotel immediately after the Games.

Hotel Union assistant secretary MARK BOYD says by not rostering casual staff from tomorrow,
Mr FISCHER has effectively sacked them.

Mr BOYD says the company is sacking the workers simply because it wants to avoid paying
retrenchment entitlements.

He says if the hotel cleaners were kept on until after the Olympics -- when the hotel
shuts for conversion into a residential complex -- the workers would have to be paid their
entitlements.
