NSW: Hundreds more apply for rainwater tank rebates

(Embargoed until 0500 tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec 10)

SYDNEY, Dec 10 AAP - Sydneysiders are becoming more water conscious with more than
600 applications for rainwater tank rebates flooding in over the past eight weeks, NSW
Energy and Utilities Minister Frank Sartor said today.

"This brings to 2,407 the number of rebates applied for since the tank scheme was first
announced," Mr Sartor said.

Homeowners receive a rebate if they buy one of a range of rainwater tanks, depending
on the tank's size and capability.

Some can be connected to toilets or washing machines, while others are used for gardening
and even drinking.

Mr Sartor said October was the busiest month of the year with more than 300 rebate
applications lodged with Sydney Water.

"It wasn't that long ago that rainwater tanks were frowned upon by local government
and consumer alike, but the tank is making a comeback in a big way," he said.

Tanks between 4,000 and 7,000 litres have proved the most popular, accounting for almost
half the $392,350 in rebates already paid.
