Qld: Firefighters warn of difficult fire season

BRISBANE, Aug 13 AAP - Drought conditions across Queensland will mean a dangerous fireseason this year, the Queensland Rural Fire Service said today.

The Weather Bureau has reported many areas across the state were experiencing someof the driest weather on record, particularly in the south-east corner.

Rural Fire Service district inspector Bernie Trembath said the fire season officiallystarted on August 1.

He said while the lack of rain has resulted in less grass and scrub fuel than in previousyears it has increased fire potential in forested areas.

Authorities were especially concerned about the risks in semi-rural and bushland areasand he urged residents to clear their properties of any hazardous materials.

"What we're trying to do is not scare people but to prepare them," Mr Trembath said.

"There is the potential here for a very bad fire season.

"If we do the right thing, if we prepare ourselves, if we don't let these fires startand be here and actually running when the bad weather hits us then we have a very goodchance of not having a bad fire season."
